The Netballers braved the January biting cold temperature to host a friendly at St Benedict’s against St Anne’s, Fulshaw. The coaches decided to let some of the Y5’s have their first experience of a competitive game with four Y5’s and three Y6’s making up the team.
The game began with a strong St Annes team who towered over our Y5’s taking the lead with a very good shooter on target at every opportunity. At the end of the first quarter St Anne’s led and by halftime St Benedict’s were trailing but the team remained positive and determined to play better. In the third and fourth quarters St Benedict’s began to play strongly and the rotation of three Y6’s on court for the 2nd half made a difference with the team able to move the ball more effectively up the court to make attempts on goal. The last quarter was our strongest with 2 very good goals by GA Caterina which narrowed the gap but was not enough to catch up on St Anne’s early lead. Post-match summary focused on needing to move the ball forward up court, moving into space, tighter marking of the opposition and calm shooting. St Benedict’s were gracious in defeat and the game was played in good spirit by both teams. Well done to St Anne’s and we look forward to a rematch! Well done to the Y5 players who put up a good game against their older counterparts A particular mention for great defending by Emily L and Amy. Player of the match goes to Caterina whose determination and calm shooting put us on the scoresheet.
