Religious Education

Intent

At St Benedict’s, Religious Education is the most important of all the subjects. It is the reason our school exists – to teach children about the life of Jesus so that they can learn about Religion, and to teach about the messages He shared with us so that they can learn from religion.

RE is given high priority and we aim to teach it in an inspiring and engaging way. We encourage children to wonder and to be inquisitive and for the children to be in awe. Fundamentally we want to teach children to be active participants in society and to keep the Gospel message at the heart of all they do. We encourage them to think of others through our charity work and we teach them about the work of inspirational people in all aspects of the curriculum.

Implementation

We use the Diocesan recommended programme – ‘The Way, the Truth and the Life’ from Reception to Year 6. The children will take part in 2 whole school collective Worships and 3 class collective worships each week. In addition, throughout the liturgical year they participate in prayer trails and whole school masses. The children in Year 3 have the opportunity to take part in the Sacramental Programme and make their First Holy Communion.

Impact

The RE curriculum at St Benedict’s teaches our children how to live Gospel values and informs them about social justice. It gives them fundamental knowledge concerning religions and cultures different to their own in order to become tolerant citizens in line with British values.
