Music

Intent

We regard St Benedict’s as a musical school and immensely value the creative aspect of this special discipline. The pupils are taught music at least two half terms in the classroom, however we believe that music is a fundamental aspect of our school spiritually and culturally. We give the children an opportunity to express themselves musically and build on their musical skills to give them a life-long love of music.

Implementation

In Key Stage 1 children will be taught to use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes, to play tuned and untuned instruments musically, to listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music and experiment with, create, select and combine sounds using the inter-related dimensions of music.

In Key Stage 2 children will be taught to sing and play musically with increasing confidence and control. They should develop an understanding of musical composition, organising and manipulating ideas within musical structures and reproducing sounds from aural memory. It is important that our children have access to music tuition in school. We currently provide lessons for the children to learn to play guitar, ukulele and recorder.

Impact

The impact of our children being competent musicians is that our pupils are given opportunity throughout the school calendar to perform in a variety of contexts for different purposes: from harvest celebrations, to the KS1 nativity and the KS2 end of year play. We also take pride in showcasing our talents in the community; our Christmas service at St Benedict’s Catholic Church; our annual singing of Christmas Carols at the retirement home and taking part in the annual Wilmslow School’s Music Festival. All of these opportunities give St Benedict’s the skills, knowledge and understanding to become musicians for life.
